Power Kites Direct to Donate Trainer Kites to Groups that Work with ADD ADHD – Kites as Therapy

In an effort to help kids with ADHD, Power Kites Direct is donating 10 beginner kites to groups that work with children diagonosed with ADHD. The aim is to allow kids to improve hand to eye coordination by focusing on achievable goals. These small tasks include manuevering a 2 line trainer kite to different areas of an imaginary clock in the sky (eg. moving the kite from 11 o’clock to 12 o’clock to 1 o’clock) under the supervision of a kite safety expert.

How groups with kids with adhd can go fly a trainer kite

The inspiration for the project came about from a news story about Michael Phelps. Several articles wrote that although he had problems in school because of ADHD, he was able to hyperfocus on his sport to ovecome any learning disabilities and excel. “Our hope is that by donating these highly manueverable power kites, kids will learn to focus on the fine motor skills required to complete goals as well as just enjoy the fun of flying a kite,” says spokesperson John Anderson. The children will also learn the basics of how wind works and some basics of power kiting. For safety reasons, kite instructors will also be holding the kite bar and have a depowerable safety release attached to their arm.

ADHD is a medical condition that affects how well a person can sit still, focus, and pay attention. This affects 8-10% of school aged people and a vast larger number that remains undiagnosed. People with ADHD have differences in the parts of their brains that control attention and activity. This means that they may have trouble focusing on certain tasks and subjects, or they may seem “wired,” act impulsively, and get into trouble. This ultimately has a negative affect on their learning and decision making skills.

This pilot program is the first of it’s type. If this small test run is succesful, it will be expanded nationwide to other ADHD focused groups connected with children and learning challenges. If you have a group that would like to be considered to receive a donated power kite, please contact the company at www.powerkitesdirect.com/contact.
